Ask just about any baseball scout or reference most baseball publications and you will discover that Andrew Benintendi, a 2016 AAU Sullivan Award Nominee, is the consensus top prospect in all of Major League Baseball entering the 2017 season. Drafted 7th overall by the Boston Red Sox in the 2015 MLB Draft after winning College Baseball’s prestigious Golden Spikes award that same year, Benintendi fast-tracked his way through every level of the organization’s farm system, ultimately making his big-league debut on August 2nd of last year.
Unfortunately, however, Benintendi’s initial big-league experience was plagued by a knee injury, limiting him to just 34 games in 2016. But determined to live up to his top prospect billing and make an immediate impact in 2017, the young slugger has been training harder than ever this offseason, adding more than 20 pounds of muscle through intense weight training and a strict diet, and has also dedicated himself to a comprehensive hitting and throwing program as well.
The good news is that Benintendi will still be considered a rookie in 2017 since he did not have enough plate appearances in 2016 to qualify, and he will surely be a contender for Rookie of the Year Honors in the American League. The sky is really the limit for this emerging superstar and we’re all lucky to have the chance to watch his journey.
