Cabrini University pitcher Joe Schipsi commits to AAU USA International Collegiate Summer Team

Press Release | January 15, 2018

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.—The AAU USA International Collegiate Summer Team baseball program will play its first season under manager Mike Graham and head coach Chris Cummings in July, but the coaching staff is on fire on the recruiting trail.

Cabrini University (Pa.) sophomore LHP Joe Schipsi has committed to play his 2017 collegiate summer baseball for the AAU USA International Collegiate Team, Graham announced.
Schipsi, who plays college baseball for Cavaliers Coach Nick Weisheipl in the NCAA Division III Colonial States Athletic Conference, joins the group of collegiate players assembling to represent the AAU USA International Collegiate Team vs Ireland and Scotland.

Ireland will host the AAU USA International Collegiate Team as part of the Ireland International Baseball Festival at Ashbourne International Baseball Centre, County Meath, July 10-15. Opponents include the Ireland National Team, Irish Baseball League All-Star Team, USA Military Blue Devils, and non-tournament matchups to be announced later.

Scotland will host the AAU USA International Collegiate Team for an international friendly series at Edinburgh and Glasgow July 5-10. Opponents in Scotland include the Scotland National Team and the Edinburgh (Giants, Diamond Devils, Cannons) and Glasgow (Galaxy, Comets) clubs of the Scotland National Baseball League.

Schipsi is a 2016 graduate of perennial New Jersey scholastic baseball power St. Joseph (Hammonton, NJ). A four year varsity starter, Schipsi was on the 2014 Varsity team that won the New Jersey South Non-Public B Championship. He played travel with the 2014 and 2015 Rawlings New Jersey Prospects.

“AAU international collegiate is a great option for my college summer baseball and to see and experience the world at the same time,” Schipsi said. “Coaches Graham and Cummings are experienced and successful in international baseball.

“I like how they run things and how well they’ve done over the years winning AAU States and going to Nationals, the Collegiate Baseball League Europe, and the whole pro look, championship culture and player support operation they have. The coaching staff is very genuine and cares about their guys and it’s very obvious.

“They operate one of AAU Baseball’s most successful programs in the country. I had my eyes on playing with them for Spain even before their scouting learned about me and sought me out. My parents encouraged me to go for it and I decided this is a great opportunity.”

Schipsi is the fifth commit to join the AAU USA International Collegiate Team, including Drew Ventrelle (University of Chicago, Ill.), CJ Cummings (University of Mary Washington, Va.), Connor Graham (Anne Arundel CC, Md.), and Daniel Keating (Wellington HS, Fla.).

“We already have a good mix of veteran and newcomer talent to international baseball,” Graham said. “We are excited to have Joe with us. We should be competitive and Joe is going to be a big part of whatever success might come our way. He fits exactly with what we try to do—the kind of player who wants to experience the game outside his comfort zone and see the world.”

Schipsi has three more seasons of college ball in front of him. As a freshman at Cabrini, he made 9 game appearances on the mound and averaged 5.6 K’s per game with a 9.25 ERA.

“I couldn’t be more excited. The fact that I get the opportunity to play internationally at this level vs Olympics/National Teams was appealing for me,” Schipsi said. “And Europe, getting to see the world playing baseball, that’s not a hard decision to make.”

At St. Joseph HS against Cape Atlantic League Conference and New Jersey HS South Non-Public B regional competition (61-34, .642, 2013-2016), Schipsi posted a 2-0 record on the mound for the Wildcats with 9.4 K’s per game and 9.42 ERA.

“The kind of athletes we recruit don’t wait for life to come to them—they go get it,” said Graham. “It’s great to have a player like Joe sign on for the adventure ahead.”
