AAU Baseball Homerun Derby a Big Hit
The Homerun Derby for the AAU Player Evaluation Camp pitted the best of the best batters against each other. Each team went through a skills combine throughout the day before capping off the day with the competition. Players from each team brought their best to the plate, each given eight outs.
The competition proved tough but rising senior Jacob Southern from Orlando Baseball Academy came away with the prize.
“I’ve been in a few homerun derbies and I’ve never won one before, so it’s pretty nice, “ said Southern. “I got pretty excited.”
Although he finished strong, his turn at bat didn’t quite start out as planned. “My first couple swings I was just trying to get loose, and then I was just trying to lift the ball a little bit. I got a little nervous at the end when I didn’t have any at seven outs but I just stuck with my plan and drove the ball.”
As one of the first few competitors, Southern was feeling the pressure as the competition went on. “I didn’t think three would win it. I thought people would beat me.”
A Jacksonville University commit, Southern loves to play AAU and especially the AAU PEC. “I just love showing off my skills and showing everyone how I play baseball.”
The final homerun derby standings were as follows:
Jacob Southern (Orlando Baseball Academy) - 3
Omar Colon (Assault Baseball) - 2
Jordan Diaz (Boston Blue Jays) - 1
Chris Rodriguez (Assault Baseball) - 1
Andrew Lindsey (Gators BLUE) – 1
Nelson Maldamdo (Gators BLUE) – 1
